Scope
This policy applies to all Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) Graduate Medical Education (GME) resident and fellow physicians.
Policy Statement
IUSM GME requires residents to have reliable transportation across training sites.
- Residents must have reliable transportation to/from home, educational activity sites, clinical rotations, and any other scheduled events. In most cases this will require the resident to have access to an automobile.
- Regardless of whether residents use personal vehicles or rely on public transportation, including buses, trains, ride sharing services, it is the resident’s responsibility to allow for the extra time and any costs associated with transportation to ensure timely arrival.
Reason for Policy
The purpose of this policy is to define resident physicians’ responsibilities for transportation during their training programs.
IUSM GME programs offer educational training throughout the state. Because of the varied locations of required educational experiences, all residents must have reliable transportation to travel at all hours and among destinations within the state of Indiana.
Procedures
- Residents are responsible for understanding site transportation requirements and making appropriate plans to comply with transportation requirements before the beginning of a rotation.
- Residents pay for all travel-related expenses unless otherwise noted by the training site, program, or appropriate ACGME Review & Recognition Committee (RRC). Residents should familiarize themselves with training sites and program-specific policies regarding travel-related expenses, including whether reimbursement is allowed using education funds.
- To maintain quality education programs, program sites may change from time to time. Residents are expected to adjust transportation needs as necessary to accommodate any changes in program sites.
Definitions
A resident is an IUSM resident or fellow, or a non-IUSM resident or fellow rotating through IUSM who provides clinical care as part of a GME program.
Transportation refers to the action of transporting someone or something or the process of being transported.
Implementation
The Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for GME is responsible for implementation of this policy.
